Australian Curriculum Links:

  • Locate and collect relevant information and data from primary and secondary sources (Australian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, 2014a, ACHASSI095)
  • Present ideas, findings, viewpoints and conclusions in a range of texts and modes that incorporate source materials, digital and non-digital representations and discipline-specific terms and conventions (Australian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, 2014b, ACHASSI133)
  • Apply a methodology to locate and collect relevant information and data from a range of primary and secondary sources (Australian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, 2014c, ACHASSI153)
  • Examine primary and secondary sources to determine their origin, purpose and reliability (Australian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, 2014d, ACHASSI156)

Rationale: The most common educational transactions students will make through the Internet are those used for the location and access of information (Mioduser, Nachmias, Lahav, and Oren, 2000). Therefore it is important for teachers to ensure students know how to access and use online databases and libraries, such as TROVE, that may have a positive affect on their education (Mioduser, Nachmias, Lahav & Oren, 2000). TROVE is a useful online library catalogue for use in classrooms as it can be readily used to teach students how to locate and access digitized primary and secondary sources available through the collections of the National Library of Australia (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, 2014e). TROVE can be harnessed by teachers to model how to search for particular types of primary and secondary evidence to support historical recounts and descriptions (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, 2014a).
